Building on Flood Plains

Gravity Consulting Engineers were appointed in 2010 to carry out a design for 205 units comprising houses and apartments that were to be built on a flood plain in Tonbridge. The early project stages involved the production of a series of designs for value engineering options designed to raise the buildings above the floor plain on stilts and walls. Methods included the development of precast / prefabricated elements to help speed up the construction of the substructure elements. We were also required to detail design substantial areas of decking that would provide safe, dry, access to and from properties in the event of a flood.
